On 2nd July Bishop Thornton CE Primary School was given the official go-ahead from North Yorkshire County Council to move to a new home.
During the summer holiday, the School will transfer to the much larger premises owned by the Admiral Long Foundation at Burnt Yates, two miles from Bishop Thornton village.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the School and its children and families,” said Mrs Liz Bedford, Head Teacher of Bishop Thornton School.
“Our new home will provide much more space for children and teachers, with generous indoor facilities including a large school hall with modern PE equipment. Outdoors there are gardens, extensive woodland and wildlife areas and a big sports field with play equipment.”
Keen to consult local people before going ahead, the School’s Governing Body produced their own consultation documents in March and the result was overwhelming support for the move from both parents and the local community.
Following North Yorkshire’s statutory consultation period in May, a final decision was made by their Executive Member for Education and Skills, County Councillor Patrick Mulligan, who described the move as “a wonderful opportunity and a very positive development.”
“Bishop Thornton School has thrived for many years in its original building and has a reputation that we are very proud of,” said Chair of Governors, Caroline Smith. “However, it has been challenging to consider expansion of the present site, and so, like a family that has outgrown its home, we are beyond delighted to be able to move, within our catchment area, to larger premises with extensive outdoor facilities.”
The new site will open on 3 September, with quality wraparound childcare available 7.30am-6pm.
In all other respects, the School will continue to exist in exactly the same way, County Councillor Patrick Mulligan pointed out: “with the same head teacher, teachers, staff and governors and the same warm and welcoming ethos, albeit in greatly improved facilities.”
The School is already receiving new applications for reception starters and in-year transfers for this September.
Mrs Katie Ward, Senior Teacher, said:
“We will continue to be a school with a strong family feel, working together to provide exciting opportunities for all our children.”
