FiiT like a girl is a specially structured fitness class coming to Ripon for pre-teen girls. Aimed at getting girls active and increasing confidence and self-esteem.
As a thirty-something woman, I am more than aware of how hard low self-esteem can be. But most importantly, I am a mum of pre-teen twin girls and I’m determined to make them and their peers as self confident as possible. You can imagine how alarming it is to read that some research is suggesting a girls self-esteem peaks at just 9 yrs old (A Mighty Girl).
There are many contributing factors including a reduction in physical activity around this age. Reasearch shows that by Year 6 girls are significantly less active than boys. Body image, lacking confidence, low self-esteem, mixed PE sessions and a lack of interest in the available sports are all factors as outlined in this report from the end of last year. Bodies and identities are changing so fast in this age group, it doesn’t seem take much to knock self-confidence.
I’m a qualified personal trainer so I understand the health benefit of exercise for children and I also have a degree in working with children and young people, making a career out of helping young people feel good about themselves.
Our classes are about feeling included, being pleased by what we can do, supporting our peers and having fun. Activities are planned to ensure every girl feels confident enough to take part.
Come and join our classes running in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough. Ripon classes are being held at Upstage Academy on Fridays at 4.30pm. Booking is essential as places are limited. Book here.
