Every season Mumbler goes in search of the best budget-friendly activities and best deals around to keep the kids entertained. So, we’ve got a list of some of the best free, low-cost or reduced entry fee activities on in our area in the run up to Christmas.
Get free entry to the beautiful Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th December with a National Lottery ticket or scratchcard. A great chance to explore the grounds with the new Nativity trail by following the stars to find the characters from the Nativity story hidden along the way. Ripon Museums will be celebrating the 175th Anniversary of “A Christmas Carol” on 22nd December. Why not join them as they screen the film “A Muppet Christmas Carol” and enjoy the many other festive activities! Where better to experience some traditional festive fun than in the atmospheric, Victorian Workhouse? All activities are free but admission costs apply. Find out more here.

The Curzon cinema in Ripon will be holding another Kids Club on Saturday 8th December to see the film Christopher Robin, starring Ewan McGregor. Tickets cost just £3 (tickets still available at time of publishing). Book tickets here.
There will be a Midwinter Storytelling At Brimham Rocks on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd December. The 40 minute sessions run between 11am – 4.15pm. Celebrate myths and folklore inspired by the season and the magical landscape of Brimham Rocks in an interactive storytelling experience with storyteller Noel Watkins. Join in with stories, songs and riddles. Each session will be 40 minutes long. Event tickets £5 per child with one free accompanying adult. Car parking charges may apply. Booking essential. Visit Bolton Abbey for a Christmas Countdown. Stroll through a wintery Strid Wood and spot the wooden Christmas trees dotted along the trail. Each Christmas tree has a number of oversized advent calendar doors waiting to be opened….Free event but estate admission charges apply.

If you’re looking for a family day out then we can definitely recommend The Druids Temple at Swinton Bivouac. It’s is a beautiful place to visit and entry is free. Run or cycle through the woods and discover old stone monuments including the old Druids Temple. They also have a cafe (with beautiful views across the hills) on site so you can warm up with a hot chocolate after your adventure. You can read our review here.
