Library Assistant Shaun from Ripon Library shares his Top 3 favourite children’s books of all time for World Book Day recommends new and upcoming releases.
If you are looking for some great books to read before, on and after World Book Day, here are some suggestions! At least my personal favourites…
The Magic Faraway Tree—Enid Blyton
My favourite book from my childhood and it is something I am currently re-reading! It really grasps the essence of childhood dreams and imagination as a group of adventurous children explore the many lands that exist above the ‘Magic Faraway Tree’. This gave me years of happy dreams and I had my mum and dad read me this story over and over.
Percy Jackson (Series). Rick Riordan
My favourite series of children’s books! If you enjoy the Harry Potter series then you are likely to love this series. I won’t give too much away, but the story centres around Percy Jackson and friends who attend a school for demigods (half gods, half humans) The Gods of Greece are very much alive and breathing in this world and it is so fun, scary and quite educational. Had me hooked even at aged 16! The first book in the series is The Lightning Thief and I heavily suggest you give this series a go—especially if school is studying Ancient Greece.
Jampires! David O’Connell and Sarah McIntyre
This is my favourite picture book to read to children. I haven’t got a whole lot to say about this other than it centres around these strange vampire-like beasts that don’t hunt for blood… they hunt for jam! Do you LOVE jam doughnuts? Well sadly these little creatures will steal the jam before you take the bite! Muwahahahhaha!
The other titles are some upcoming and new children’s books that feature some of the most fun and well-known authors!
* Tom Gates: Family, Friends and Furry Creatures
* The Squirrels Who Squabbled
* There’s a Monster in Your Book
* Barry Loser: Worst School Trip EVER
* The Children of Castle Rock
All of these can be found at the local library or ordered free of charge! Remember, you can have up to 10 books per card at any one time!
