Find out more about the Ripon Children’s Christmas Appeal, and how you can support local families this Christmas, in our guest blog from appeal organiser, Shelley Leslie.
Ripon Children’s Christmas Appeal was started 3 years ago by 2 local Ripon ladies initially to provide advent calendars for children whose families used Ripon Foodbank. The community was very generous and they were able to provide gifts as well.
I became involved following a request on social media for someone to take over the appeal in October 2015, I have worked in the Early Years sector for almost 30 years’ and felt that this was something I would be able to help organize. Everyone has been very generous and we have been able to support even more organisations. Gifts are given to the children supported by Ripon Foodbank, also gifts from Santa at Ohana special needs group (meaning they don’t need to spend their precious funds), The One Organisation who support many families in this area, and this year, The Salvation Army will also receive toys and gifts for their families.
Christmas, as we all know, is a time for giving and spending precious time with our loved ones, however for some families it is a period of worry and guilt as they have to make choices between buying gifts, food or paying bills. How do you explain to a child that Santa wont be visiting them this year, when adverts, television and friends tell them that all good children get presents from Father Christmas? Of course Christmas isn’t just about presents, however, by donating to this appeal it means that a family has one less thing to worry about and the children can experience the magic of Christmas morning
How You Can Help
The children we are giving to this year are from birth to 13 years, some with additional needs, books, sensory toys, lego, art and craft materials, selection boxes, board games are always popular. All gifts should be new and unwrapped, gifts will start to be distributed from 8th December, final date for drop off is 16th December
Donations can be dropped off at Caffe Tempo in the arcade.
