Who Are We?
‘Bread of Life’ Food Bank, was started in September 2011, as a word of God that was given, for the use of Ripon Community Church. To show care to the many people within our city, who have fallen on hard times. It is managed and run on behalf of the Church, by Mr. Alec Lutton, and Mrs. Ruth Bakes, with the help of both Christian and non-Christian friends.
What We Do
The food parcels are made up and collected on a Friday evening every two weeks. On the evening of the food bank deliveries, we use the Salvation Army hall in Lead Lane. This food bank is not connected in any way to the Salvation Army, however we do have a good working relationship with them, and try and help each other out when possible.
We provide food parcels for many people, both families and single parents, also single people. We try and help each request for a minimum of three months. However, some are long term. At the moment the number of people requiring help varies. Those who need help are referred to us from many different charities.
Each person is reminded when their three months is up, and some are referred again, or cancel the support. Each family or person is given enough in a food parcel to last them between 6 – 8 days. All food must be either cans or packets, we are not allowed for legal reasons, to give out fresh food e.g. meat or fish. Some food parcels are delivered by a driver and helper. (1 male, 1 female), as we deliver to those who are elderly or have small children, all others are asked to collect.
1. We are not there to judge.
2. It is important that people know we care and want to help them.
3. We listen to what they say, and help if the law permits us to.
All contact we have with those we help, is kept in the strictest confidence possible, as we do not want names or addresses made public. Everyone working for the food bank is required to sign a confidentially and commitment form.
How You Can Help
The three main supermarkets within the city allow us to collect food donations from their shoppers. On the days we are at the supermarkets we have many helpers who show up to help with collecting food donations from the public. The food bank also has a drop of point, for anyone wishing to leave donations of non-perishable food:
Community House, Sharow View,
Allhallowgate, Ripon HG4 1LE
The food bank has a bank account at Barclays Bank, Ripon. Please ask for details if you wish to donate funds.
